Judiciary and Mafias: Barriers to Pakistan’s

Except for Chief Justice Yahya Afridai and a handful of other honorable judges, most appointments to the Supreme Court during the eras of Saqib Nisar, Asif Saeed Khosa, Gulzar Ahmed, and Umar Ata Bandial were made without merit. These individuals were elevated merely to sign off on pre-written judgments. Today, the nation is witnessing their true performance in live transmissions, and the results speak for themselves. Sadly, instead of serving as a pillar of justice, the judiciary has turned into one of the greatest obstacles to Pakistan’s progress.

In almost every sector of our beloved country, mafias have entrenched themselves and are stalling development. From the sugar and flour mafias to market manipulators, lawyers’ groups, exploitative education lobbies, and extremist organizations operating under religious banners — all operate with impunity, putting personal gains above national interests.

For decades, the most powerful mafia was none other than the establishment itself, which repeatedly seized control in the name of “national security.” Each time it stepped back under public pressure, it left the nation in deeper crises. Recently, for the first time, an army chief chose to stay away from politics and uphold his oath of neutrality. Instead of being respected, this stance was branded as weakness, and soon another mafia emerged to fill the vacuum.

The judiciary’s current decline is reflected in global rankings, where Pakistan stands among the lowest. This is not without reason — it is the outcome of a system compromised by judges who themselves have admitted to being “black sheep” within the institution.

At present, the government and current establishment are attempting to align efforts for economic revival and national stability. Yet, certain judicial elements continue to obstruct progress at every step. The only way forward is to stand firm against all mafias — whether political, economic, religious, or judicial — and to hold accountable those who poison the country’s system. Without such decisive action, the time left to protect Pakistan’s future is running out.
