UK Set to Recognise Palestinian State After Israel Fails to Meet Conditions

The United Kingdom is preparing to formally recognise the state of Palestine as early as Friday, following Israel’s failure to meet conditions that could have delayed the historic step. The move comes after months of debate, amid mounting international concern over Israel’s military actions in Gaza and the wider region. Prime Minister Keir Starmer stressed that the recognition was not linked to US President Donald Trump’s visit, despite Trump voicing disagreement with Britain’s decision. Starmer insisted that recognition forms part of a broader package aimed at achieving “a safe and secure Israel” alongside “a viable Palestinian state.” He ruled out any role for Hamas, calling them terrorists, and said the UK envisions a Palestinian state under the Palestinian Authority, with elections scheduled within a year. The decision follows consultations with France, which recognised Palestine in July, and reflects growing frustration with Israel’s refusal to agree to a ceasefire or halt settlement expansion. While critics argue Palestine does not meet statehood criteria under international law, supporters say the recognition is essential to preserve the possibility of a two-state solution. On Monday, Palestinian envoy Husam Zomlot is expected to raise the Palestinian flag in London, formally inaugurating the embassy.
