UN General Assembly Votes 142-10 in Favor of Two-State Solution for Israel-Palestine
The United Nations General Assembly voted overwhelmingly to support the long-discussed two-state solution to the Israel-Palestinian conflict, adopting the “New York Declaration” by 142 votes in favor, 10 against, and 12 abstentions. The declaration outlines a phased plan aimed at ending nearly eight decades of conflict, while explicitly excluding Hamas from any role in the process. Sponsored by France and Saudi Arabia, the resolution envisions a Palestinian state governed by the Palestinian Authority, alongside Israel, with international support for security and stability. It also proposes a temporary UN-led stabilization mission to protect civilians and monitor implementation of future agreements. The declaration condemns Hamas’s October 7, 2023 attacks, which killed around 1,200 people, while also criticizing Israel’s ongoing military operations in Gaza that have left tens of thousands dead and caused a severe humanitarian crisis. Despite the strong international backing, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu rejected the move, declaring there would be “no Palestinian state.” Israel’s UN ambassador dismissed the resolution as “theater,” while the United States called it a “misguided publicity stunt.” Palestinian UN Ambassador Riyad Mansour welcomed the vote as a reflection of the global community’s will for peace, urging Israel to “listen to the sound of reason.”
